Christmas Cards
$60/100 cards. $30/50 cards, or $20/25 cards.
I began Christmas Night when my children were little. They helped me brainstorm what the ornaments should be. It was such fun! With life so busy, I put it away without finishing it. I thought about it as the years flew by and often just looked it over.
Do you know a watercolor has to be painted in your mind completely before you can begin on paper? You have to reserve your white places. Masking fluid helps; a kind of glue you may apply to the paper so you can paint over an area then remove the mask and your whites are still there (snow). The paper is white so you paint your light colors around the areas you determine should stay white, then paint your darker colors next to the light ones. I like to blend the colors one into the other. That is done mostly while the paint is wet; tricky business.
When I was inspired to finish this special painting, I still pondered as I stared at it, looking for balance in color, image and technique. Each pine needle was two stokes, if not three or four to get the color right (glazing). When I rubbed off the mask to reveal the snowy window, I glowed inside, like the angel, peacefully watching over the ornaments. The whole tree took to life.
The original watercolor is 9 x 12 and I logged over 50 hours; I'm guessing 53. I asked my children if they remembered it and a couple of them did. Julie remarked, "I know you spent a lot of time with the tree, Mom, but I like the floor best." I like it too. It is where I put my signature.
